Turning to Our Lady on Memorial Day

Updated: Jul 23

On Memorial Day, as we honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service of our country, it is fitting to turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of all Christians, for her intercession and guidance.

The Blessed Mother, often referred to as "Our Lady," has long been a source of comfort and strength for those who mourn the loss of loved ones. In times of great sorrow and upheaval, she stands as a beacon of hope, offering her maternal care and protection to all who seek her aid.

As we remember the fallen on this solemn holiday, we can find solace in turning to Our Lady, who understands the depth of human suffering and the anguish of losing a loved one. Through her powerful intercession, we can ask for the grace to find peace, healing, and the strength to carry on in the face of such immense loss.

One way to honor Our Lady on Memorial Day is to pray the Rosary, meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life, death, and resurrection. The Rosary is a powerful prayer that has been used for centuries to seek the Blessed Mother's intercession, and it can be a source of comfort and strength during times of grief and mourning.

Additionally, we can seek the guidance and protection of Our Lady through the invocation of her many titles, such as "Our Lady of Sorrows," "Our Lady of Perpetual Help," or "Our Lady of the Battlefield." These titles reflect the Blessed Mother's deep understanding of the suffering and struggles of humanity, and her willingness to be a constant companion and guide to those in need.

Here is a sample prayer to Our Lady of the Battlefield:

Hail, Our Lady of the Battlefield!

Patroness and Protectress of all who serve in the defense of freedom and justice.

In the heat of battle, when the cannons roar and the swords clash,

be our guide and our shield.

Intercede for us before your Son, that He may grant us the courage and wisdom

to face the trials of war with unwavering faith and conviction.

Watch over our comrades-in-arms, that they may be shielded from harm

and strengthened in their noble struggle.

Comfort the wounded and the dying, that they may find solace in your loving embrace.

Console the families of the fallen, that they may find peace amidst their grief.

Queen of Heaven and Earth, Our Lady of Victory,

watch over all who risk their lives to defend the innocent.

May your mantle of protection enfold us,

and may your prayers sustain us in the crucible of battle.

We entrust ourselves to your intercession, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

As we gather with family and friends to remember and honor the fallen, let us also turn to Our Lady, entrusting our loved ones to her care and asking for the strength and courage to face the challenges that lie ahead. Through her maternal love and intercession, we can find solace, comfort, and the grace to continue living in a way that honors the sacrifices of those who have gone before us.
